Synopsis: In the nineties, China was captivated by the powerful spell of Wang Anyi’s epic, award-winning novel “Changhen Ge,?considered by critics and readers alike to be a contemporary literary masterpiece. Today, under the elegant and passionate directorial hand of Stanley Kwan, this wonderful, sorrowful tale has found an immaculate cinematic expression in Everlasting Regret.

Set in Shanghai, the film covers the period from 1947 to 1981 - from the tumultuous interval preceding the Communist Revolution of 1949, through the drastic changes imposed by the Cultural Revolution and its new leadership, up to China’s acceptance of modernization in the recent past.

Following the life of a celebrated beauty as her pre-Revolution glamour and status are reduced to Proletarian modesty, the film’s powerful grace and intimate wisdom reflects the sorrow of lives overwhelmed by mighty waves of change.

A cascade of roses, as precious as gold bars, envelops the lovely Qiyao (Sammi Cheng) on the stage of the Miss Shanghai contest. The wealthy and powerful Officer Li (Hu Jun) lays claim to her and keeps her as a lover. Qiyao spends the turbulent time leading up to the establishment of the People’s Republic in the gilded oblivion of this romance, her life a parade of lavish parties and the security of a luxuriously decorated apartment with servants to wait on her. She whiles away her time awaiting Li’s visits, but one day he disappears. Her glamorous lifestyle seems to vanish, along with the old, radiant Shanghai, with the advent of the new regime. For Qiyao, the years to come will be a long string of struggles and lamentable relationships.
